He Walks With Me

When our granddaughter, Rhea, was stillborn, I was asked by my daughter, Rachel and her husband, Brandon, to share a few words at her graveside service. A miscarriage or a stillborn birth can leave us with so many questions and not many answers! So, as I was preparing I was led to sharing from 1 Corinthians 13:12. I like the way it is stated in The Message version,

We’re squinting in a fog, piercing through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright.

As I prepared, I was in a fog, filled with grief and pain for our family. The next morning before heading out to do the service, I looked outside and the fog was so thick you could hardly seeI had to squint to see outside structures. The TV weatherman said it is a beautiful, clear morning except there is a patch of fog around the town of Morristown. This is exactly where the cemetery was located.

As we arrived at the cemetery there was a beautiful mist-fog in the air! As I started to speak, the sun started to break through the mist to let us know, in our grief and pain, the sun would shine again just like the verse said. The fog wasn’t just the weather for the morning, it was symbolic of our temporary and limited understanding of our lives. I could only know in part what God’s eternal plan was for Rhea and for us.
